Cosmetic surgery is better understood – this area tends to focus on changing people’s appearance through surgical techniques.
Aesthetic medicine applies to non-invasive procedures (using needles, lasers etc). They are still medical in nature, but smaller procedures which often can be done in an hour or less.
What’s the difference between cosmetic surgery and aesthetic medicine?

Dr Barbara Kubicka explains that with aesthetic medicine, a number of different issues can be treated, broadly categorised as:
- Conditions/problems e.g. acne, scarring, rosacea
- Ageing concerns – lines, wrinkles, sun damage
- Improving the look – e.g. lip enhancement, non-surgical nose job
There are numerous solutions and areas of activity, summarised as:
- Clinical peels, microdermabrasion, laser for skin care
- Injectables such as dermal fillers and wrinkle relaxing for anti-ageing treatments
- Hair growth procedures, such as PRP, vitamin therapy for stimulating the scalp and hair health
- Advice on skincare products or supplements
The consultation is the starting point, with discussion of the problems and what the patient is trying to achieve as well as a medical review; after which the doctor can recommend the most appropriate treatments.
