IPL is one of the most versatile and powerful skin treatments available to aesthetic physicians in the UK today. Yet it could be thought to have something of an ‘image problem’ itself, in that it has become almost synonymous with hair removal, when it is capable of much more.

IPL

IPL, which stands for Intense Pulsed Light, is a popular choice for laser hair removal, which is now available quite widely not only at skin clinics but also at a wide array of beauty salons or hairdressers. Most often it is fair to say that the IPL systems used are relatively low-tech and used almost exclusively for treating unwanted hair. They can do a fair job of hair reduction as the light beams kill the hair follicles, stopping further growth.

Yet this barely scratches the surface of the power of IPL.

The more sophisticated machines, in the hands of a trained, skilled and experienced Aesthetic Doctor, can be used to treat a variety of skin conditions with effective results.

IPL Laser is effective for a range of anti-ageing treatments, including:

  • fine lines and wrinkles
  • improving skin texture and complexion
  • promoting firmer skin
  • reducing pore size
  • sun damage
  • pigmentation

In addition to this, it can treat medical skin conditions without the need for medication, including:

  • acne
  • rosacea
  • oiliness
  • scar tissue

IPL works by giving off a range of specially tuned light-waves which work on 2 levels:

  • Intense light-beams pass through the skin and targeted areas in the skin which are different in colour to the surrounding tissue; this includes scars, freckles, thread veins, some birthmarks and other pigmented skin
  • The lightwaves work deep within the skin to stimulate production of new collagen for a firming and tightening effect.

As more doctors acquire the advanced technology, so patients and clients have a wider range of choices for their skin treatments.
