Platelet Rich Plasma

PRP platelet rich plasma

PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is an advanced aesthetic treatment which is used in top skin clinics for anti-ageing treatments, nick-named as the ‘vampire facelift’ due to the use of blood. Originally developed as a treatment for burns victims, PRP is based on using a highly purified extract of the patient’s own blood, harnessing and concentrating the healing power of platelets which are then applied or injected back into the skin for healing or rejuvenation.

PRP is a powerful and effective treatment which has wide potential applications. The treatment has also been used for promoting healthy hair growth and forms part of Dr Barbara Kubicka’s Triple Synergy Hair System. It is also used in sports therapy, where the PRP can be injected back into the afflicted area to promote healing.

The possibility of creating a PRP gel is an interesting development, as it could help to promote healing very quickly, addressing a common problem that burns often continue to get worse rather than better for hours or days after the original injury, developing into more extensive and deeper burns which may require skin grafts. The hope is that PRP gel could allow the wound healing process to start earlier, avoiding this further deterioration.

Development of the treatment is at early stages, entering a trial of about 40 burns patients.

The high cost of creating a customised gel for each patient, based on samples of their own blood, means that commercial use is unlikely for the foreseeable future.

PRP Treatment

In the meantime, PRP treatment is available at Clinicbe in Knightsbridge, London. Dr Barbara Kubicka also offers the innovative PRP fillers, using platelet rich plasma in very targeted areas in place of dermal filler to release focused healing and regeneration into problem areas.

Dr Kubicka explains why it is actually sympathetic to the body’s natural processes:

The principle of PRP, like all the best things in life, is simple yet clever.

PRP is based on utilising the body’s own healing and rejuvenation resources by extracting and purifying a sample of the patient’s blood to create a plasma solution which has a super-rich concentration of platelets.
