As the mistletoe is hung, for smokers no amount of lip gloss can seem to bring back the full and luscious lips of youth.
What are Smokers’ Lines
Smokers’ lines or ‘barcodes’ are the lines that can appear on and around the lips after the repetitive sucking action of smoking. They can be very ageing, leaving quite noticeable grooves into which lipstick or gloss can ‘bleed’ for a most unattractive effect.
It is thought to be the pursing action of smoking which weakens the muscles around the mouth, causing frequent muscle movement, stretching the bands between muscle and skin so that the skin itself becomes thinner.
Treatment for Smoker Lines
Pronounced smokers’ lines are very difficult to get rid of. However, modern aesthetic medicine and skilled practitioners offer a number of solutions that can help.
- Dermal fillers or specially formulated lip enhancement filler can be injected into skin to replenish lost volume, essentially plumping and smoothing out the wrinkles by thickening the skin. This can be done in and around the lip area. The latest generation of lip fillers are soft and pliable and will last for several months, at which point treatment can be repeated
- Botox injections into the actual lip area can reduce the movement in the area
- Peels can be used to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. This has an immediate boosting effect by revealing new skin beneath, but the longer term benefit is also important as the process triggers skin healing and regeneration processes for younger, smoother skin
- PDO threads can be used to create a lip lift, turning down-turned, loose and slack skin into a more youthful shape
