Acne Flareups? Winter Recovery Plan

acne winter recoveryIf you have noticed that your acne has got worse over the winter season, you’re not alone.

Many sufferers of acne find that they have flare ups and breakouts in January, February and March as the skin reacts to the combination of triggers that this time of year involves.

  • Lifestyle – the colder, darker weather in winter often means less time outdoors, less exercise and more staying in.  Late nights and parties take their toll before Christmas, but as we get into the new year, perhaps the issue is more about vegging out in front of the TV.
The lack of fresh air and cardio boost can have an impact on the condition of your skin.
Aim to have a 30 minute walk out of doors at least 4 times a week.  Fresh air and exercise are great for boosting circulation and fitness.  If you’re already doing that, aim a bit higher.
  • Extremes of temperature – it’s cold outside, yet thanks to central heating, warm indoors. Both can aggravate your skin, but when you’re going from hot to cold environments and back again, your poor skin can’t keep up. It can become dry and that leads to overproduction in oil as your body tries to redress the balance and protect itself. This is when acne flareups can become an issue.
  • Diet – our food choices in winter tend to be a bit more calorific than in summer, as we naturally seek warm and comforting food. However, a diet that is rich in sugar and/or fat can trigger acne problems.
It’s not just the main meals, but also the special snacks and treats that add up. As we emerge from the worst of winter weather, now is the time to take stock of any dietary habits that have built up over the last few months and go back to basics, ensuring good intake of fresh veg, salad, fruit and protein with a focus on cutting back on sugar and fat.
If you can identify any specific triggers for acne flareups e.g. curry, then best avoid those too.
  • Drink – don’t forget to think about what you’re drinking. Alcohol is just one factor – choosing soft drinks or fruit juice often means a high sugar intake.  Special coffees like latte or indulgent hot chocolate also contain lots of sugar which can trigger acne flare ups.  As days get longer again, try and find a mindset of getting back on track.

Acne Treatments

If acne has become severe, lifestyle and diet changes may not be enough.  Don’t be afraid to seek professional help. Untreated severe acne can cause long-term scarring and there can be impacts on a person’s confidence too.
