Acne Myth – How The Sun Affects Acne

Fact or Myth?

acne sunMany people believe that a bit of sun exposure should help to improve the condition of acne-troubled skin.

There is a theory that exposing your face to the sunlight can kill the acne-causing bacteria and dry the pimples.

With summer on its way, you may be looking forward to your skin clearing up on its own, but is it true? In actual fact, it varies.

Some people may find it beneficial to have some time outdoors, but many acne sufferers find that sunbathing has the opposite effect. Some find that the condition actually gets worse, especially in hot temperatures, as sweating blocks the pores and irritates the skin, causing greater inflammations.

A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology found that when sebum is exposed to the ultraviolet radiations of the sun, it becomes more comedogenic (tending to cause blocked pores, blackheads and spots) than before.

So acne can definitely get worse in the sun.

What’s more, the skin should always be protected from UV radiation while sunbathing to avoid the risks of premature ageing, pigmentation and even skin cancer. However, while this is absolutely essential, in practice, sunscreens can irritate acne too. If you are in the sun, you should always wear sunscreen to protect your skin. If you’re worried about it inflaming your acne, then look for a brand that is non-comedogenic. In addition, you should also cover up with hats/clothing and stay out of the sun at its peak times.

So the conclusion is, don’t seek the sun as a cure for acne.  A proper treatment regime including at-home and professional treatments will be more effective and safer too.

Professional Treatments for Acne

To improve the condition of acne, good treatments to consider include:

  • Facials with appropriate products for acne. Steps such as exfoliation and a light peel mask can be helpful before application of specialist products to soothe and heal acne troubled skin
  • Plasma shower delivers energy into the skin where it works to kill acne bacteria both on the surface skin and also deeper within pores
  • Laser/IPL works to target acne troubled areas killing bacteria, reducing redness and promoting healing within the skin
  • Dermapen microneedling can be very helpful in boosting skin healing and renewal. At ClinicbeAcne, Dr Barbara Kubicka offers this treatment combined with a gentle chemical peel in a treatment protocol developed specifically for acne sufferers
  • Exfoliating treatments such as peels or microdermabrasion, designed to remove dead skin cells and excess oil
  • Nutritional advice and supplements designed to improve the skin from within
