Causes and Types of Hair Loss in Men

male anti-ageing

The most common cause of hair loss in men who seek treatment is androgenic alopecia (also known as male pattern hair loss or MPB).

Two-thirds of all men will eventually experience losing their hair due to androgenic alopecia, but it is especially traumatic when it seems to happen earlier than expected while others are retaining their hair for longer.

Male Pattern Baldness

Androgenic Alopecia

Male pattern baldness is caused when the hair follicles are oversensitive to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a form of the testosterone hormone, but is more potent and has stronger effects than testosterone itself.

DHT is thought to make the hair follicles shrink, so that hairs become thinner and shorter with each growth cycle until they shed more and eventually stop growing. The recession of hair tends to follow a specific pattern, starting at the temple or crown before becoming more generalised across the top of the head.

Male pattern baldness tends to be inherited. Surprisingly, it is often the mother’s side that dictates a predisposition to hair loss rather than the father’s.

Other causes of hair loss in men

Other types of male hair loss include:

  • Alopecia areata – where smaller bald patches appear on the scalp (about the size of a 50p)
  • Scarring alopecia or cicatricial alopecia – resulting from complications from a wound or another condition
  • Anagen effluvium – common side effect of chemotherapy or other aggressive treatments
  • Trichotillomania or hair pulling – caused by a habit of obsessive/compulsive pulling out hair

Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatments

London

Dr Barbara Kubicka at Clinicbe treats men and women with hair loss using non-surgical hair loss and scalp treatments. These are a cheaper option compared to hair transplant and tend to deliver a more natural-looking result.

Her ultimate treatment is the Triple Synergy Hair System, a tailor-made approach combining Platelet Rich Plasma treatment with mesotherapy and vitamin supplements. The principle is to stimulate the body’s own mechanisms to improve scale health and retention of hair while ensuring that the body is receiving the correct nutrients too.

Treatment plans are tailor-made to the individual’s requirements.
