Cosmetic treatments are sometimes maligned in the media, for example, where treatments are carried out on patients who are too young (see Doctor’s Caution About Young Non-Surgical Treatments) or else overdone, leading to frozen features or over-inflated trout pouts on the lips.

However, non-surgical treatments can be a very positive and helpful when done correctly. They can improve specific aspects of the appearance such as the shape of the nose or lips, tackle the signs of ageing such as sun spots or wrinkles, or improve the condition and health of the skin for a healthier-looking appearance.

In a recent interview with List for Life, Dr Barbara Kubicka discussed how appearance can be an important factor in career progression:

I think appearance is the first thing people notice in job interviews.

If you feel you look your best you will be more confident and do better at work as a whole.

Acne is a big thing that knocks the confidence of people, particularly young people, but there is help available to get rid of it. Use a good exfoliator with fruit acids in it, clean your skin properly and use hydrating products. Microdermabrasion and chemical peels can also work wonders.

It’s important to address the psychological side of confidence because when I did a placement at the NHS in their psychiatry unit I saw that stress and depression shows on the body and the face.

If we feel we don’t look our best we can feel dismissed and rejected which can have a huge impact on your career.
