Cyclical Adult Female Acne

Acne Before a Period

acne periodsIn adult women, acne is very often a cyclical problem which flares up just before menstruation (peri-menstrual).

At this time, the acne can become very severe with deep and tender lesions.

The areas most commonly affected are:

  • Jawline
  • Chin
  • Neck
  • Lower cheeks

However, other women may have a different pattern.

What unites them is that the worst time for acne is just before the period starts. After menstruation, the acne tends to be less severe for a couple of weeks.

The cyclical nature of this particular condition needs to be considered in any treatment plans.

GPs tend to prescribe antibiotics for severe acne, but that is not often the best approach for cyclical acne, as

  • Antibiotics would probably kick in too late to be of much benefit
  • Antibiotics would not be prescribed on a monthly basis
  • Antibiotics should not be overprescribed

The other treatment most commonly prescribed by a GP is topical treatment, but again, this is not necessarily the best approach

  • Again, these can take a few days to kick in
  • A strong topical treatment would not be necessary and possibly too harsh at those times of the month when the acne was less severe
