Hair Loss StressExperts are reporting an increase in hair loss as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is not only related to those who have had the virus, some of whom have seen increased hair loss and shedding as a symptom. In addition, there are reports of hair loss among people who have not tested positive and experts say that their clients have noticed more hair coming out than normal in recent months.

Experts are saying that this is likely to be due to the stress that has resulted for many of us from the forced change changes in lifestyle and worries about the impact of the pandemic.

Hair loss and alopecia are known to be symptoms of stress, which can cause noticeably more hair to be shed than normal, leading to the hair looking generally thinner.

This issue was covered in our earlier article Is Stress Causing Hair Loss? which was actually recorded and published during lockdown. The article includes video and explanation of the impact of stress on the hair from Dr Barbara Kubicka.

5 Ways to Treat COVID-Related Hair Loss

Vogue recently reported on the rise in hair loss this year, explaining that the condition is affecting both sexes. The American Hair Loss Association has recently reported that nearly 40% of the country’s hair-loss sufferers are women.

Vogue suggested 5 possible treatments:

  • Supplements
  • Scalp exfoliation
  • Topical hair tonic
  • Follicle stimulant
  • Non-surgical treatments such as PRP or laser

Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatment at Clinicbe London

Dr Barbara Kubicka is a pioneer of non-surgical hair loss options.

The process begins with a detailed consultation. Hair loss is a complex and individual issue. Understanding its causes is the first step in providing an appropriate solution.

A hair loss consultation at Clinicbe is incredibly detailed. It starts with an OligoScan, which uses advanced technology to scan your skin to highlight any mineral deficiencies, or presence of heavy metals which could be causing loss of hair. All without a blood sample.

In addition, a trichoscopy examination is also carried out. This is a visual examination using high magnification in order to see any physical issues with the hair, follicles, skin or scalp.

Then a variety of treatment options can be considered either alone or in combination. Options in the 7-step hair loss programme include:

  1. Detox
We use steam treatment to warm the scap and open pores. This stage is designed to aid the release of any toxins and impurities that may be clogging the follicles. We then apply exfoliating alpha and beta hydroxy acids to penetrate the follicles and break down any build up and blockages. This helps new hair to grow more freely and will also help to stimulate circulation.
  2. Nutrition
If your OligoScan points at any vitamin and mineral deficiencies, we can apply a special solution. Firstly, the scalp is prepared with Dermapen microneedling, then the solution of hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, growth factors and other nutrients can be applied. This will give the scalp and hair components that are essential for maintaining the optimal health. This solution is helpful for all hair loss, especially weak, thin and damaged hair.
  3. Stimulation
To stimulate new hair growth, we can apply a solution of peptides (proteins) and growth factors (smaller peptides). Peptides work to stimulate the growth of new hair while growth factors can directly stimulate the growth of specific tissues. As above, the scalp is prepared using Dermapen microneedling before application of the peptides.
  4. Intense Stimulation
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses a sample of your own blood which is then treated with a special centrifuge machine to separate out platelet rich plasma. The scalp is prepared with Dermapen microneedling, then plasma is applied so that it can enter deeply into the skin, where it releases powerful healing agents. This method provides intense stimulation and is strongly recommended for moderate to severe balding.
  5. Homecare
We can prescribe or prepare appropriate home care products from an extensive selection of options. Special preparations, shampoos and conditioners are available that work to stimulate growth and help with hair retention too shedding. The appropriate home care products work alongside any in-clinic treatments to give optimum results.
  6. Supplements
Good nutrition is a vital component in ensuring the growth of healthy, strong hair. We recommend supplements for nearly all our hair loss clients, but will adjust the supplement suggestions, dosage and delivery (tablet or injection) according to the individual’s requirements.
  7. Red light treatment
Hair stimulation option can be of benefit in protecting the hair and scalp both during and following non-surgical treatments.

Clinicbe also offers the ‘Triple Synergy Hair System‘ – a tried and tested programme that combines 3 approaches to stimulate scalp and hair health.
