SPF in Makeup Is Not Enough

Experts advocate daily use of sunscreen, but Dr Barbara Kubicka warns that the amounts in makeup won’t provide enough protection:

“While having SPF in makeup is a great add-on, the quantity of SPF is not sufficient to provide adequate sun protection.”

She says that we should all have a separate sunscreen under makeup:

“A dedicated sunscreen that is specifically formulated to provide concentrated amounts of protection is key.”

Further advice on sun protection includes:

• Choose a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA or UVB
• Wear it every day, all year – even on cloudy or cooler days
• Apply sunscreen everywhere that may be exposed to the sun – including neck and hands as well as face
• Put sunscreen on at least 20 minutes before going outdoors
• Make sure you don’t apply it too thin – use a generous amount and then rub in well
• Thoroughly cleans at the end of each day to avoid blocking pores
