Expert Skincare Advice in VOGUE

vogueVOGUE explored the trend for having a dedicated skincare fridge, with expert advice from Dr Barbara Kubicka in its feature:

“Do You Actually Need a Skincare Fridge?”

Mini fridges for skincare have gone viral on TikTok and the hashtag #skincarefridge has had over 83 million views with owners sharing videos of their skincare products chilling and keeping cool.

There is a scientific argument for storing certain skincare products in the cold. Some ingredients like retinol, benzoyl peroxide and vitamin C definitely benefit from being kept cool, as it helps to keep them stable.

VOGUE asked Aesthetic Physician and skincare expert Dr Barbara Kubicka to explain more. She said:

“Many skincare products benefit from being kept in the fridge. Specifically, natural products and those that contain few preservatives.

“The cold helps ingredients stay potent for longer – especially antioxidants, growth factors and peptides – as well as extending their shelf life.”

So when a skincare label advises storing in a ‘cool dark place’ a fridge fits the bill perfectly.

The other benefit to keeping skincare in the fridge is that it’s cool when you apply it. Using chilled skincare can often feel nice, but in addition, it can be beneficial in reducing redness, inflammation and puffiness. It can also boost circulation as your skin responds to the cold.
