Acne Pigmentation & Discoloration

This can be a long-term problem and can be difficult to conceal with make-up.

Types of Acne Pigmentation

  1. Hyper-pigmentation
  2. Hypo-pigmentation
  3. Erythema

Hyperpigmentation

This condition is caused by raised levels of melanin pigment in the skin at the site of the injury or inflammation. Hyperpigmentation is characterised by:

  • Redness
  • Freckle-like spots
  • Blotchiness

Hypopigmentation

This condition is the opposite of hyperpigmentation as it relates to lower than normal levels of melanin pigment in the skin at the site of the injury or inflammation. Hypopigmentation is characterised by:

  • Light, pinkish skin
  • Doesn’t tan easily

Erythema

Permanent Redness

This condition is caused by enlarged capillaries which are visible near the surface of the skin. Erythema is characterised by:

  • Red or flushed-looking skin
  • Even in cool temperatures
