How To Prevent Acne This Christmas

christmas acne

Christmas and New Year can be quite a challenge for those who suffer with acne. Even those with normally clear skin can find that the festive period brings breakouts and flare ups.

December is great fun, but the combination of a busy social life plus the stress of organising presents and entertaining can make us tired and run down.

When our body is not in top condition, the skin can be the first to show the signs. So for those with a tendency to acne, the condition is often worse than usual.

Tips to Reduce Acne This Christmas

To reduce the risk of an acne breakout, it helps to understand the factors that could be triggering it.

  • Food – the festive diet is often high in fat and sugar. Chocolate and rich foods take the place of healthier choices and it’s not just mealtimes that are a problem – festive snacks such as mince pies, biscuits or luxurious coffees all take their toll on the skin. Try to be aware of what you’re eating and limit treats. Keep up with plenty of fresh veg, salad, fruit and protein.
  • Drink – firstly, try to avoid dehydration. Drinking plenty of water helps your body to metabolise and keeps skin hydrated too.  Then, no surprises here, you need to be conscious and careful with other drink choices. Alcohol Christmas is a time for indulgence in drink as well as food.  Alcohol dehydrates our bodies, which not only means a can cause a red, irritated complexion as well as a headache. Other drinks may have quite a high sugar intake which can trigger acne flare ups.  Try to limit the treats and drink plenty of water.
  • Makeup – chances are you’re going out more and wearing more makeup than usual – especially if you’re keen to avoid too much heavy makeup. Choose lighter mineral foundation or oil-free products. Give your skin a break every so often with a makeup free day.
  • Skincare – late nights may mean that you are a little less diligent with the skincare regime. Never be tempted to sleep in makeup, as this can really trigger acne issues.  Choose a good gentle cleanser suitable for acne and remove every last trace of makeup and sweat before treating your skin to a good moisturiser or serum. If you don’t have a particular regime, getting a cosmeceutical acne treatment programme can make a radical difference to troubled skin.
  • Exercise – Over December, many of us lose the rhythm of a healthy routine.  The government recommend 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week but vigorous exercise is more efficient, so it’s only 75 minutes if you up the pace. We’re also recommended to do 2 days of strength-building exercises. Leaving the sofa and getting active will boost your circulation, help the skin and your entire body will benefit. Exercise is great for reducing stress too.
