Hyaluronic Acid – Expert Advice on HA Serums

Buro LogoFashion and lifestyle website Buro looked at the latest advances in hyaluronic acid serums with expert advice from Dr Barbara Kubicka.

As founder of Clinicbe, Dr Kubicka is extremely knowledgeable about hyaluronic acid, both in its injectable form in dermal fillers and in serums. She has even developed her own Be HAppy Serum with hyaluronic acid for her own Essentials Skincare Range.

Buro Guide to Best Hyaluronic Acid Serums

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is already found in the human body. It is can hold many times its own weight in water which makes it key to keeping skin plump, supple and hydrated. However, as Dr Barbara Kubicka explained:

“…as we age, the levels of hyaluronic acid start to decrease”

This means that the skin is less able to retain water, becoming dryer and looser.

Who could benefit from hyaluronic acid skincare products?

Dr Kubicka told Buro:

“All skin types can benefit from using hyaluronic acid. However, it might be of particular benefit to those with oily or combination skin.

“Skin that lacks water often produces more oil to compensate, so increasing the amount of water in the skin can help to stop the body producing this excess compensatory oil.

Serum vs Moisturiser

Hyaluronic acid is found in a range of skincare items, but it is important to understand that they are not all the same. Dr Kubicka told Buro:

“Hyaluronic acid has a watery consistency, so when applied to the skin topically, it sinks in without leaving a film on the surface

“Moisturiser on the other hand, has a thicker consistency and usually contains lipids and emollients to soften the skin and mimic sebum, the skin’s natural oil. A moisturiser will leave a protective film on the skin, which is particularly beneficial for dry skin (skin that lacks sebum).”

For best results, experts recommend using both, allowing them to work together for optimum results. Dr Kubicka continued:

“…any moisture that you apply on top will then be absorbed and retained by the hyaluronic acid molecules too, maximising their usage.”

Serum vs Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid is available in dermal filler injections as well as serum. Dr Kubicka explains that fillers are a better option for plumping the skin and replenishing lost volume, as:

“…these products can be placed in specific areas affected by loss of volume for plumping out deeper and more hollow areas of skin.”
