PRP – Non-Surgical Solution for Hair Loss

Male Pattern Baldness

Around 40% of men will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are just 35, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Some men see it as early as their 20s and a massive 1.2 billion people worldwide are thought to be affected by hair loss (source: LaserCap company).

So if you are suffering from hair loss, you are certainly not alone. However, that doesn’t make it feel OK.  Hair loss can be devastating to a person’s confidence and self-esteem.

Why Hair Loss Occurs

The most common cause of male hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia (AA). This is a genetic condition, which means that it is inherited (either from mother or father’s side). In people who have Androgenetic Alopecia, higher levels of hormone dihydrotestosterone are made (DHT is a testosterone derivative). DHT attacks hair follicles, causing them to shrink so that the hair falls out.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatment

Tackling hair loss does not have to mean hair restoration surgery. This is an expensive option with certain recovery implications.

PRP has emerged as a very compelling alternative.

Platelet Rich Plasma treatment is a non-surgical treatment which involves applying or injecting a highly purified sample of the patient’s own blood back into the scalp.

A sample of the patient’s blood is purified and separated in a centrifuge in order to separate the plasma which contains a high concentrate of platelets, which are rich in growth factors which promote healing and regeneration.

Scientific studies have been carried out on the treatment, which have shown PRP treatment for hair loss has a

‘positive therapeutic effect on male androgenic alopecia without major side effects’.

(Gentile, P et al, ‘The Effect of Platelet-Rich Plasma in Hair Regrowth: A Randomized Placebo- Controlled Trial’, Stem Cells Translational Medicine, 4 (2015), pp.1317–1323.)

The principle is that PRP improves the scalp and follicle health, strengthening and reinvigorating the follicles. The benefits are not immediate but develop over the following months as the cells regenerate and the scalp becomes healthier.

Dr Barbara Kubicka has also developed her own exclusive ‘Triple Synergy Hair System‘ combination treatment, which combines PRP (platelet rich plasma therapy) with mesotherapy and vitamin injections to slow hair-loss and encourage regrowth.
