LightScan™ Fractional Laser

Non-ablative laser skin resurfacing for fine lines, texture, pores and pigmentation – with minimal downtime

LightScan™ is a non-ablative fractional laser that refines skin texture, softens fine lines, minimises the look of pores and helps even out sun damage and pigmentation, by stimulating your skin’s own collagen renewal without removing the surface of the skin.

LightScan is a computerised scanner handpiece that connects to the same Eufoton laser device we use for Endolift®. Where Endolift works beneath the skin to tighten and contour, LightScan works on the skin itself, treating the surface and upper layers of the dermis in a fine grid of micro-points. Together, they let us address both the structure and the quality of your skin with one laser system at Clinicbe in Knightsbridge, London.

What is LightScan™?

Fractional laser treatment delivers energy to thousands of microscopic points, leaving healthy skin in between untouched. That untreated skin supplies new cells quickly, so healing is fast and recovery is short compared with older, full-surface laser resurfacing.

LightScan adds computerised precision to this. The scanner places each micro-point without overlap, and your practitioner adjusts the size of the treated area, how densely the points are spaced and how much energy is delivered. That means the protocol for fine lines around the eyes can be quite different from one for sun damage on the chest or hands.

What LightScan™ can help with:

  • Skin texture and tone: smoother, brighter, more even-looking skin
  • Fine lines and early wrinkles: on the face, neck, chest and hands
  • Enlarged pores: a more refined, less visible appearance
  • Sun damage and pigmentation: including age spots and uneven tone (suitability assessed at consultation)
  • Skin firmness: a gradual improvement in tightness and resilience

How does LightScan™ work?

LightScan uses a technique called non-ablative fractional photothermolysis. In plain terms:

  1. Micro-columns of heat. The laser (1470 nm) is absorbed by the water in the dermis, creating thousands of tiny, controlled zones of heat just beneath the surface. Each micro-spot is only around 200 microns wide.
  2. The surface stays intact. Because the outer layer of skin is not removed, the skin barrier is preserved and the risk of a prolonged recovery is much lower than with ablative lasers.
  3. Healing from the sides. Untreated skin between each micro-zone rapidly supplies new cells, which speeds up repair.
  4. New collagen and elastin. The skin recognises the controlled heat as a signal to renew itself, gradually replacing damaged tissue with fresher, firmer skin.

Collagen takes time to form, so results build gradually over the weeks following each session, and a course of treatments is usually recommended rather than a single visit.

Benefits of LightScan™

  • Minimal downtime: most people go back to normal daily life straight away, with some redness for a short time.
  • Precise and even: the computerised scanner places every micro-point without overlap.
  • Fully customisable: depth, density and coverage are tailored to your skin and concern.
  • Versatile: one technology for the face, neck, chest and hands.
  • Gradual, natural-looking improvement: no β€œdone” look, just healthier-looking skin.
  • Combines well with other treatments: works alongside skin tightening, injectables and skin-quality treatments as part of a wider plan.
  • Lower-risk alternative to ablative lasers: the skin surface is preserved, which is why non-ablative fractional lasers are often considered when patients want a more favourable safety profile and less social downtime.

LightScan™ and Endolift®: two handpieces, one laser device

LightScan connects to the same Eufoton laser that powers Endolift, but each treats a different layer. Endolift® uses a fine optical fibre beneath the skin to tighten, sculpt and, where needed, reduce small pockets of fat. LightScan treats the surface and upper dermis to improve texture, fine lines and skin quality. Together they address both the quality of the skin and its underlying laxity.

This combination has been studied. A 2025 case series in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology compared Endolift alone with Endolift plus LightScan on opposite sides of the face in patients with uneven ageing signs. The authors concluded that combining a subdermal contouring laser with a fractional non-ablative laser gave more balanced, comprehensive rejuvenation. This was a very small study, so it’s encouraging rather than conclusive, but it reflects why we often discuss the two treatments together.

How LightScan™ Differs from Other Skin Treatments

Many of our patients ask how LightScan compares with other treatments at Clinicbe. In short:

  • Versus IPL: IPL uses broad-spectrum light mainly to target surface pigment and redness. LightScan is a laser that works on water in the dermis to renew collagen and improve texture.
  • Versus Dermapen microneedling: microneedling stimulates repair mechanically with fine needles. LightScan uses precisely controlled laser heat, and is often chosen where pores or sun-damaged texture are the main concern.
  • Versus radiofrequency & microneedling: these use radiofrequency energy for deeper tightening. LightScan is a laser-based approach with a more precise surface-texture effect.
  • Versus chemical peels: peels work chemically from the top down. LightScan leaves the skin surface intact while stimulating the layers beneath.

The right choice depends on your skin, your concern and your goals. That is exactly what your consultation is for.

LightScan™ FAQ

What does LightScan™ feel like?

Most patients describe a warm, tingling or prickling sensation. Numbing cream is applied beforehand to keep you comfortable. Because the surface of the skin is not removed, treatment is generally much more comfortable than ablative laser resurfacing.

What is the difference between fractional and non-ablative laser?

"Fractional" means only a fraction of the skin is treated, in a grid of micro-points, leaving the skin between them untouched to heal quickly. "Non-ablative" means the outer layer of skin is not removed or vaporised. LightScan is both, which is why recovery is so short.

What downtime or side-effects can I expect after treatment?

Most people have redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling that settles within hours to a couple of days. Mild swelling, dryness and a rough "sandpaper" texture can last a few days as the skin renews. Less commonly, temporary pigment changes or blistering can occur, which is why we assess your skin carefully and give clear aftercare instructions.

When will I see results?

Some people notice a healthy glow soon after treatment. Because the effect relies on new collagen forming, improvements in texture and fine lines build over the weeks and months after your sessions and continue after your course is complete.

How many sessions will I need?

Early skin ageing and texture concerns often respond to a short course. Your practitioner will recommend a plan based on your skin and goals at consultation.

Who is a good candidate for LightScan™?

LightScan suits adults who want to improve skin texture, fine lines, pores or sun damage without the downtime of ablative laser. It is not suitable for everyone, and we always assess your skin type, medical history and medication first.

Who should not have LightScan™?

Treatment is usually postponed or avoided if you are pregnant, have an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, have a fresh tan, have taken isotretinoin (Roaccutane) recently, use photosensitising medication, or have a history of skin cancer in the treatment area. Your practitioner will go through this with you.

Can LightScan™ treat pigmentation and melasma?

It can improve some sun-related pigmentation and uneven tone. Melasma is more complex, as heat-based treatments can trigger it to worsen in some people, so we assess this carefully and may recommend a different approach first. See our Hyperpigmentation page.

Is LightScan™ safe for darker skin tones?

Non-ablative fractional lasers preserve the surface of the skin, which is generally why they are considered a gentler option than ablative lasers, particularly where the risk of pigment changes is a concern. However, suitability, settings and the number of sessions must always be individually assessed.

Can LightScan™ treat scars, acne scarring or stretch marks?

Yes. LightScan is also used for these concerns, and the approach differs from facial rejuvenation. See our LightScan for Scars & Stretch Marks page for the full details.

Can LightScan™ be combined with other treatments?

Yes. It is often planned alongside Endolift®, Profhilo®, polynucleotides, anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. Your practitioner will advise on the best sequence and timing.

What aftercare guidelines do I need to follow after the procedure?

  • Avoid makeup in the treatment area for at least 12 hours
  • Avoid direct sun exposure and sunbeds for at least 1 week
  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily
  • Avoid saunas, steam rooms and hot baths until redness has settled
  • Avoid vigorous exercise for 24–48 hours
  • Do not use retinols, vitamin A creams or acid-based products for at least 3–5 days
  • Avoid other facial treatments and chemical peels for 1–2 weeks
  • Keep skin hydrated with a hyaluronic acid-based serum and gentle moisturiser

How long do LightScan™ results last?

New collagen is long-lasting, but skin continues to age and sun exposure continues to cause damage. Many patients have occasional maintenance sessions to keep their results, alongside daily SPF and a good skincare routine.
