Stylist

Stylist’s recent feature on how to deal with eyes that look tired included expert advice from skin treatments expert, Dr Barbara Kubicka.

The article was entitled:

“The truth about dark circles, puffiness and under-eye bags – and how to deal with them”

As the article explains, having eyes that look tired isn’t necessarily due to lack of sleep:

“You might have had a solid eight hours – the best sleep of your life, even – yet when you wake up those tell-tale signs of tiredness that suggest you’ve been up all night are still there.”

Issues can include

  • Puffiness
  • Circular shadows or dark circles
  • Looking tired

Dr Kubicka explained why dark circles appear and why they seem to get worse:

“Loss of volume happens with age, which makes circles look worse.

“Poor circulation is one culprit, but in some cases, especially in skin of colour, the circles are caused by hyperpigmentation.”

She then went on to explain how eye bags appear:

“Our eyeballs are surrounded by fat tissue and when the ligaments become lax, they can be seen underneath the eye, presenting themselves as a bag.”

Dr Kubicka told Stylist that change of lifestyle is the most effective treatment as eye bags are usually caused by tiredness, dehydration and screen usage. She said that a caffeine-based serum may to help, used in the morning to reduce overnight puffiness.
