Dr Barbara Kubicka provided expert advice for Vogue magazine on how to manage your skin through the hormonal swings and other body changes associated with pregnancy:

“How To Take Care Of Your Skin When You’re Pregnant”

The article explains the frustrations and challenges that can emerge during pregnancy:

“Those with previously blemish-free skin find themselves tackling acne, whilst perennially oily types are suddenly as dry as a desert.

“And what was that about a glow?”

Pregnancy can affect the skin in a number of ways, affecting the skin. Some experience greasy skin as a result of excessive sebum production while others find that the skin becomes very dry.

Pigmentation is a particular risk as the skin is more susceptible to melasma (patchy pigmentation) which is also known as ‘pregnancy mask’, such is the association with being pregnant.

Wearing SPF is therefore essential. But what other skincare practices should pregnant women review?

Dr Barbara Kubicka gave her expert advice on products:

“When it comes to active ingredients all alpha-hydroxy acids are safe to be used for those with acne-prone skin.

“I would recommend products with a very low content of unnecessary additives. My favourite when it comes to product purity is the Bakel skincare range.”

Mandelic, glycolic and lactic acid are known for exfoliating and clarifying, so it is good news that they are safe for use in pregnancy on acne-prone or pigmentation-prone skin.

However, Dr Kubicka advises against using hydroquinone based products:

“It’s a substance used for skin lightening and hyperpigmentation. Arbutin and kojic acid are another two lightening substances that should be avoided during pregnancy.

“For those on treatment for acne or rosacea I would recommend checking with their dermatologist as some topical antibiotics are contraindicated as well.”

Retinoids (vitamin A) are also to be avoided. Oral retinoids have been shown to cause harm to the unborn child. With regard to retinoid skincare, the European Medicines Agency state they are “less likely to cause harm” than oral retinoids. However, “as a precaution, they must not be used during pregnancy and by women planning to have a baby”.
