What is Glutathione?

“The Master Anti-Oxidant”

Glutathione is often called the master antioxidant. It is used by every cell in the body to detoxify metabolic, drug, and environmental toxins. This is because it picks up free radicals (unpaired electrons) before they damage structures in the cells.

It is a molecule your body produces naturally and is made from three amino acids: glycine, cysteine, and glutamate. Glutathione levels decrease with age and poor health. Chronic exposure to chemical toxins, cadmium exposure, and chronic alcohol use can all lead to low glutathione levels. A lack of glutathione has been associated with neurodegenerative diseases, pulmonary diseases, immune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, chronic age-related diseases, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, and the aging process itself.

Glutathione also plays a major role in supporting immune function. Higher levels of glutathione are associated with fewer illnesses.

It also seems to have significant anti-aging effects on the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and increasing skin elasticity. In addition, glutathione can also be used to lighten skin.

How Does Glutathione Work?

Glutathione is involved in many cellular processes. Glutathione catalyses two important chemical reactions to remove free radicals from the body: glutathione S-transferases (GST) and glutathione peroxidases (GPx). Catalysing these reactions, glutathione can pick up unpaired electrons and safely dispose of them. Unpaired electrons can bind to molecules in the body, changing their structure. Low levels of glutathione, especially in conditions of high oxidative stress, may lead to chronic disease and the loss of function associated with aging.

Glutathione is involved in the process of building the genetic molecules DNA and RNA as well as regulating protein production. Maintaining a balance of glutathione is also essential for optimal immune function.

Symptoms of Glutathione Deficiency

Glutathione deficiency is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Potential symptoms of glutathione deficiency include:

  • Fatigue
  • Pale skin colour
  • Light headedness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Muscle aches

Benefits of Glutathione Injections

Glutathione is an extremely powerful antioxidant that shields your cells from toxins and free radicals. Toxins can be neutralised before they cause damage, which can protect against the effects of aging. Potential benefits of supplementing glutathione include:

  • Detoxifies cells; reducing oxidative stress, toxins and harmful substances
  • Neutralising/fighting free radicals
  • Improves immune function
  • Restores glutathione levels depleted due to aging or alcohol consumption
  • Reduces wrinkles
  • Reduces triglyceride levels
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Supports Liver Function
  • Restores skin elasticity
  • Lighter skin (hyperpigmentation, blotchiness or discolouration disappear or fade) – Glutathione is involved in melanin production and some studies show it may even out skin tone
