Which type of facial is right for your skin?

METRO looked at the traditional techniques and new high tech options now available for refreshing the skin. They asked facial expert Dr Barbara Kubicka for her advice and insight in its feature:

“How to know which type of facial is right for your skin”

Facials now range from gentle pampering to intensive stimulation of the skin  with peels or high tech equipment that may require more ‘downtime’ and recovery yet could yield more dramatic results.

Metro reviewed the options with the input of various experts.

Traditional facial

Predominantly a hands-on process of cleansing, massage and hydration, these can still be effective in stimulating the skin.

Non-invasive facials incur no downtime and suit most skin types.

Clinicbe offer the Build Your Own Facial which can be adapted and customised according to individual requirements.

Chemical peel

Using chemicals to exfoliate the skin and remove outer layers of buildup and skin cells has become much more popular. Peels vary in intensity – the stronger ones can involve up to a week of redness and peeling as the outer layers are shed, but the gentler options can be done as a ‘lunchtime’ treatment with no downtime at all.

Dr Kubicka from ClinicBe told Metro:

“There are different types of peels and that impacts the outcome of the skin peel and facial. For example, one with salicylic acid will help to balance sebum production and calm down the acne prone skin.

“Peels based on lactic, glycolic or mandelic acid will gently exfoliate the skin, brighten complexion and help with superficial pigmentation. Peels hydrate the skin as well. Retinol peels help with skin renewal.”

Peels are not just suited to oily skin but can help with a range of concerns by stimulating renewal processes.

Dr Kubicka adds:

“Sun damaged skin is a good candidate for peels as well.”

However, she warns against using peels for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin and

“Darker skin types need to be treated with caution as they can be left with post-inflammatory pigmentation.

“Very thin skin is not suitable for the peel as well as it can become even thinner and wrinkled.”

LED treatment

LED harnesses safe light waves to stimulate and soothe the skin. This gentle treatment is available at Clinicbe and is often used as part of our Build Your Own Facials as well as acne treatment programmes to promote healing and leave skin radiant.

IPL – Intense Pulsed Light

IPL is a more intensive treatment which can target uneven skintone and pigmentation spots. It can also reduce redness and tackle thread veins.

As well as this, it can stimulate production of collagen. As the skin cells renew, the texture of the skin will look and feel smoother and tighter with a reduction in fine lines as well as pores.

IPL is also available at Clinicbe London either on its own or as part of a programme of treatment.
