Why Male Skin is Different

male skin care

Men’s skin is not the same as that of women for a number of reasons. Understanding the differences helps to define a more appropriate skincare routine and approach to professional treatments.

There are a number of key differences between male and female skin.

  1. Hormones
Men produce higher levels of testosterone, which has the effect of making the skin thicker. Pores tend to be larger too.
However, there are some advantages here – mens’ thicker skin has more collagen, so ageing can appear to be more gradual than for women, with fewer fine lines appearing. On the other hand, when signs of ageing do appear, they can be more pronounced, with deep furrows and creases appearing on the forehead.
  2. Facial hair
Most men have to shave daily which can cause a range of problems including irritation, redness and ingrown hairs.
  3. Sun protection
Men tend to be less diligent and aware of the importance of sunscreen. The majority still don’t tend to wear a daily sunscreen, moisturiser, or makeup containing SPF – which means that sun damage is more likely.
Those with sporty outdoor lifestyles – golfers, runners, cyclists, footballers, fishermen etc – need to be especially careful to protect the skin from the sun.
  4. Oiliness
Men’s skin tends to produce more sebum and therefore appear oilier. That makes it prone to breakouts too. Yet many men don’t use products to address this problem.

Advice for Male Skincare

Skincare is about more than a quick wash in the shower. If you don’t already have a good skincare routine, then start one – using appropriate products which address the needs of your skin. A good skincare routine for the morning would include cleanse, moisturise and sunscreen. For the evening, cleanse, moisturise and repair with active ingredients in a suitable serum.

Daily sunscreen is essential not only to protect the skin from the sun’s harmful UVA/UVB rays, but also to avoid premature signs of ageing. Get into the habit of using it every day. If you’re out in the sun, choose a higher protection factor and ensure it is regularly reapplied.

If you have any skin issues such as acne, redness or sensitive skin; then ensure you have chosen suitable products for your skincare regime. The right products can make a huge difference.

A professional with expertise in skincare can provide tailor-made skincare regime based on your individual skincare needs, with the latest cosmeceutical ingredients.

Finally, consider how professional treatments could complement your at-home regime. Many men now have subtle BOTOX® or ‘MenTox’ to look fresh for the workplace or regular exfoliation treatments (chemical peel or microdermabrasion) to keep the skin polished and reduce buildup of oil and dead skin cells. Treatments are also available to address acne and sun damage. Choose a practitioner who welcomes male patients and understands the physiological and anatomical differences between male and female skin.
