male botox monoFigures from the ASAPS (The American Society of Plastic Surgeons) have shown an increase in men having Botox, a phenomenon dubbed ‘Brotox’.

Brotox Trend

Experts believe that men are choosing to have botox primarily for career-enhancing reasons, to hide lines and wrinkles that appear as a consequence of stress and ageing.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that:

  • 8% more men had Botox injections in 2011 vs 2010
  • 5% more women received Botox in 2011 vs 2010

In an interview with Bloomberg TV, Dr Engleman, a New-York based dermatological surgeon, has been quoted as saying:

‘They just want to kind of reverse all the stress that obviously this economical climate has put on them’.

‘They want to look less tired, less wrinkled, they definitely want filler and Botox or some sort of laser treatment to make their skin look refreshed.’

What is Protox?

Protox is a relatively new term which describes a use of Botox to help professionals – male or female.

For professionals, the areas to focus on are around and between the eyes – the vertical forehead crease or furrowed brow that can often appear with intense concentration or stress, but can become more defined with repetition.

Botox, also known as botulinum toxin, is a protein that is injected into the skin. It is used to relax the fine dynamic muscles that cause lines and wrinkles, leading to smoother skin.

The protox phenomenon is not unique to New York. In London, Dr Barbara Kubicka sees many professional men and women who use Botox regularly to bring a fresh face into the work place. Some go further, specifically asking for a more “frozen look” in order to conceal emotion during negotiations.

Dr Kubicka says:

“The workplace is increasingly competitive and stressful. I see patients who are keen to look on top of the game, despite the long hours and hard work they put in.”

“Botox can be done relatively quickly with minimal side-effects, making it a much easier and more appealing option than surgery. No-one need know that it’s been done.“
