Acne Scarring Treatment

Acne scars can sometimes last for years after the acne itself has cleared up. The effects of this can severely reduce the individual’s self-confidence.

Acne scarring can be very unpleasant and can last a lifetime. In fact, avoiding acne scarring is one of the main reasons for treating acne as early and effectively as possible.

Thankfully, advanced technologies are available to reduce the visibility of acne scars or, in some cases, eradicate them altogether.

Acne Scarring Treatment Options

There are a variety of acne scarring treatments available from Dr. Barbara Kubicka. Acne scarring can leave quite deep and irregular depressions in the skin, making it look rough. Acne scarring treatments work to stimulate the skin’s healing and promote stronger, healthier skin and can also troubleshoot deeper depressions through revolumisation of the skin.

Treatment options include:

  • Dermapen or Dermastamp micro-needling
Micro-needling therapy uses micro-needles to puncture the surface of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and promoting the skin’s own natural healing processes.
  • Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy involves tiny injections of specially chosen substances to heal and nourish the skin
  • Skin Peels
Skin peels, on the other hand, remove the surface layer of skin to reveal a smoother, stronger, undamaged layer beneath.
  • Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are an injectable cosmetic treatment which add volume into the skin. They are best known for their use in anti-ageing treatments – replenishing lost volume – but they are also potentially very useful for helping acne scarring and are particularly popular among older patients whose acne has cleared but left their skin ravaged and damaged. Dermal fillers can be used in a highly targeted treatment to gently add volume within the skin to smooth out the deep scars left by acne. Dr Barbara Kubicka uses the latest advanced temporary dermal fillers, which have excellent safety records. We do not offer permanent filler.
  • Restylane Skinboosters™
Designed to improve skin quality ‘smoothening from the inside’ with hydrating injections of hyaluronic acid
  • Profhilo – this injectable treatment enhances the quality of the skin, improving texture, complexion and radiance. It is designed to boost and hydrate the skin, improving its condition for visibly healthier looking skin

Choosing the right acne scarring treatment depends on ascertaining the nature and type of scarring involved.

Types of Acne Scarring

There are 2 key types of acne scarring:

  1. Depressed
  2. Raised

Depressed Acne Scars

The most common type of acne scarring is depressed or pitted scars, which result from inflammatory acne, or papulopustular acne lesions (red blemishes, pimples, ‘zits’, papules, pustules and nodules – larger swollen lesions). Depressed scars generally sit on collagen rich scar tissue, which stops the skin from repairing the indentation.

There are 3 types of depressed acne scars:

1/ Rolling Scars

Rolling scars result of damage under the skin and are characterised by:

  • Broad or shallow depressions in the skin
  • Rounded, sloping edges
  • Rough texture and a wavy or rippling appearance

Treatments to consider:

  • IPL
  • Chemical peels
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Dermastamp microneedling
  • Dermal fillers to smooth out the depressions

2/ Box Car Scars

Box car scars often cover smaller areas than rolling scars and are characterised by:

  • Quite deep
  • Steep, defined edges
  • Similar appearance to chicken pox scars or fingernail impressions

Treatments to consider:

  • Chemical peels
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Dermal fillers

3/ Ice Pick Scars

Ice pick scars are the most obvious and hardest to cover up. They are characterised by:

  • Deep and narrow (usually under 2mm across)
  • Sunken or pitted appearance, leaving the skin looking like it was punctured
  • Look like a large, empty pore

Treatments to consider:

  • IPL
  • Dermal fillers

Raised Acne Scars

These are less common than depressed scars, but are generally more obvious.

They also result from damage caused by inflammatory or papulopustular acne.

There are 2 types of raised acne scars:

1/ Keloid Scars

Some people have a genetic tendency to keloid scarring. These form when excess scar tissue forms due to overproduction of collagen. They are characterised by:

  • Large and raised area of skin tissue

Uneven appearance

Treatments to consider:

  • IPL
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Steroid creams
  • Injections

2/ Hypertrophic Scars

These are similar to keloid scarring but less severe as less collagen is produced. They are characterised by:

  • Initially may be dark/red
  • Become flatter and paler within a couple of years

Treatments to consider:

  • IPL
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Steroid Creams
  • Dermal Filler Injections

We can access a range of top brand fillers. One of our popular choices is Juvéderm® from Allergan with options for a variety of needs and situations – including the VYCROSS range of longer-lasting fillers.

Juvéderm® dermal fillers are based on formulation of hyaluronic acid. This substance occurs naturally in the skin, where its role is to retain water for moisture and plumpness. Injected into the skin, hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to smooth out imperfections.
