Dr Barbara Kubicka in Buro

Fashion and lifestyle website Buro explored the problematic issue of adult acne with medical advice from Clinicbe founder and acne expert, Dr Barbara Kubicka.

The issue of acne is certainly not confined to puberty. In fact according to the Buro. feature, it affects some 40-50% of women aged 20-40.

Factors include stress, diet and hormones; but it can be hard to identify the triggers and thereby bring in the right treatments. Many of the high street solutions seem to be aimed at the teenage market and adult acne is quite different.

Dr Kubicka told Buro that hormones and the menstrual cycle are a big factor:

“These hormonal fluctuations significantly influence skin’s metabolism and increase sebum production.”

Women suffering from underlying conditions such as polycystic ovaries commonly produce higher levels of testosterone which causes cystic acne in around 30% of women. Being pregnant, postnatal or breastfeeding also has an impact on the hormones and can cause acne.

Dr Kubicka explains:

“On top of all these instances, there’s increased cortisol levels to consider, because stress directly impacts sebum production and disturbs our natural immune response, which ultimately leads to breakouts.

“It peaks in the morning, naturally depletes during the day, and is broken down completely during sleep, which is to say that without enough sleep, the cycle is disrupted entirely.”

Acne Skincare Routine

Buro advises a ‘dermatologist-approved’ skincare routine:

  • Cleanse – with a non-foaming cleanser. Clinicbe’s Be Purified Facial Wash, £44, uses glycolic acid to gently exfoliate skin
  • Moisturise – with a light formula
  • Retinoid – Buro says: “For severe cases of acne, tretinoin (prescription retinol) can be truly transformative. The vitamin A derivative reduces inflammation, regulates the turnover of cells and unclogs pores.” Dr Barbara Kubicka can prescribe appropriate solutions from a range of top brands
  • SPF – Buro says: “Aside from aging skin immeasurably, the sun – and specifically UVA rays – worsen acne scars and pigmentation, so SPF is a must.”

What about makeup with acne?

Dr Kubicka says:

“I always advise patients to steer clear of heavy make-up”

Buro adds:

“Lots of foundations, especially long-wear formulas, are heavy and cloying on skin, so instead look for something non-comedogenic.”

Expert Acne Diagnosis & Treatment

Dr Kubicka’s founded ClinicbeAcne, a specialist skin clinic serving the needs of patients from the age of 13 who have acne and rosacea. Her unique approach works both inside and out to create a healthier skin. Clinicbe use OligoScan Advanced Cellular Tests to generate a real insight into the individual’s cellular health. This highlights imbalances including mineral deficiencies (due to diet and food choices), accumulation of heavy metals in the body and antioxidant levels. Dr Kubicka also reviews the potential impact of diet, digestion and metabolism; which can lower immunity and make the skin more susceptible to breakouts.

With good understanding of the underlying causes, ClinicbeAcne offers a host of approaches to improve the condition of the skin from the outside.

5 High Tech Acne Treatments

Dr Kubicka’s ClinicbeAcne offers a range of high-tech treatment options for improving acne:

  1. Plasma Shower – a new concept in treating acne which uses plasma energy to address the root cause of the problem by tackling the bacteria in the skin. This treatment also aids absorption of specialist creams or serums, stimulates and accelerates healing and promotes skin regeneration. After treatment, the skin continues to improve and look healthier, clearer and fresher
  2. IPL Laser Treatment – intense pulsed light from our advanced equipment can be used to meet the needs of acne-troubled skin. The energy penetrates the skin where it works to soothe inflammation and stimulate cell growth and renewal. Redness can be eased to promote clearer-looking skin
  3. Dermastamp – this treatment embraces the concept of microneedling – tiny wounds to the skin’s surface – which work to allow absorption of serums while also stimulating the skin’s natural recovery and renewal mechanisms. Dermastamp allows precise targeting and adjustment to allow a more intensive treatment for areas most in need while taking a more delicate approach to others that may be more sensitive
  4. Cosmetology Facials – a specially designed facial can be enormously beneficial for acne and rosacea. It is important to choose a facial that has been designed with the specific individual’s needs in mind. This means an approach that is not overly aggressive yet still effective, incorporating treatments and products that best suit the skin’s needs
  5. Advanced Exfoliation – removing the outer surface of dead skin cells and grime ensure that the skin is perfectly clean. This also stimulates cell renewal and collagen production. ClinicbeAcne offer both microdermabrasion and chemical peel, which can be tailored to the needs of the skin to ensure they are effective without being overly harsh
