As seen in Financial Times HTSI

Financial Times LogoThe Financial Times ‘How To Spend It’ (HTSI) luxury lifestyle beauty columnist and facialist Adeela Crown explores sunscreen in her latest feature:

“Ask Adeela: what’s the best sunscreen?”

Adeela and her assistant visited Clinicbe to experience the advanced 3D Visia Skin Analysis, which shows the effects of sun damage on the skin in detailed photographs. The software can also project or forecast future skin ageing based on in depth data from its scans.

Adeela tells her readers to wear SPF daily.

She explains that it has numerous benefits:

  • Help to protect against sun damage
  • Reduce melanoma risk by 50%
  • Reduce the impact of UVA-related skin and ageing problems – fine lines, deep wrinkles, blotchiness and discolouration).

Sun is one of the biggest factors in how the skin ages. This is because UVA exposure leads to collagen breakdown, which means loss of texture and firmness within the skin.

SPF – Sun Protection Factor

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It is a measure of how well a sunscreen protects the skin from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection.

The SPF number is calculated by dividing the amount of UVB radiation that causes sunburn on unprotected skin by the amount of UVB radiation that causes sunburn on skin protected by sunscreen. E.g. SPF 30 means that it would take 30 times longer to sunburn with sunscreen on than it would without sunscreen.

It is important to choose a sunscreen that is labeled as “broad spectrum” to protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

To get the most out of sunscreen:

  • Apply it liberally and evenly to all exposed skin 20 minutes before going outside.
  • Reapply every two hours, or more often if you are sweating or swimming.

Here are some additional tips for protecting your skin from the sun:

  • Wear protective clothing, such as a hat, sunglasses, and long-sleeved shirts.
  • Avoid the sun during the middle of the day, when the sun’s rays are strongest.
  • Seek shade whenever possible.
  • If you have any concerns about unusual moles, see a doctor ASAP for a skin cancer screening
